Maker's Mart highlights Mother's Day weekend

There are several artists sales going on over Mother’s Day weekend, including the semi-annual downtown Maker’s Mart sale at Handmade Toledo.

Maker’s Mart is a one-day indie craft fair from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday. The shop is at 1717 Adams St.

The juried sale this year features more than 100 independent artists selling artwork and handmade goods, as well as local food and drink vendors. Organizers charge a $1 admission fee.

Also this weekend, the Artist Village at Toledo Botanical Garden, 5403 Elmer Drive, will be host to a variety of artists sales, demos, and events.

The Toledo Potters Guild will have a pottery sale Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, and the Toledo Gem & Rockhound Club will have sales Saturday and Sunday. There will be classes, glassblowing demos, and open houses at many of the studios, including Hands-On, Stained Glass, and Unruly Arts.

At 6:30 p.m. Friday, there will be a launch party for the new Art-o-mat art vending machine at Hands-On Studio.

The Artist Village is made up of fine arts and crafts guilds and studios that offer events and programming to the public.

■ A bronze bust of the founding dean of the University of Toledo college of continuing education has been created by UT professor of art Tom Lingeman.

The 3-D likeness of the late Clyde Balch will reside outside the Balch-Clapp Auditorium of the UT Driscoll Alumni Center. Lingeman created the piece in the UT Center for Sculptural Studies near the UT Center for the Visual Arts. It was commissioned by Balch’s son, Dr. Charles Balch.

The senior Balch was also a former chair of the UT chemical engineering department and the founder of the Maumee Chemical Co.

The bust will be unveiled at a reception from 6 to 7:30 p.m. May 23 at the Driscoll Alumni Center Lobby, 2801 W. Bancroft St.

■ The Arts Commission of Greater Toledo has launched the second year of its Accelerator Grant program, and is hosting an informational session for artists from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., Monday, to talk about eligibility and application guidelines.

The session will be at the Arts Commission offices at 1838 Parkwood Ave., Suite 120.

Artists living or holding a studio within a 25-mile radius of downtown Toledo are eligible for the monthly grants, which offer financial support for such things as equipment and creative project initiatives.

■ Local artists can register to have a booth at the new artist space at the 36th Whitehouse Cherry Festival, which is held annually in downtown Whitehouse.

■ The 53rd annual Crosby Festival of the Arts is scheduled this year for June 22-24 at Toledo Botanical Garden.

The general show will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 23 and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 24. A preview party will be from 6 to 10 p.m. June 22.

The show features hundreds of artisan creations in a variety of mediums, including ceramics, jewelry, painting, wood, fiber, and glass.

Daily operations were shifted last year from the Garden to Metroparks Toledo; however, the Toledo Botanical Garden nonprofit board continues to operate Toledo GROWS, its community outreach program.

Proceeds from this year’s festival will benefit Toledo GROWS.

■ A reception will be held next week at Toledo School For the Arts to display the award-winning work of local artists who participated in a poster contest.

All are invited to the TSA’s Porter Gallery from 6 to 9 p.m. May 17 to check out the work of area winners Jazlyn Hudson, a seventh grader at TSA for the work Butterflies Change, So Can We, and TSA senior Vincent Mugavero for A Model With Others. The two students’ work will now be entered in the National Poster Art Competition.

The work will be displayed through May 21. National winners will be announced in June. The contest is sponsored by the Links, Inc. This year’s theme is Our Vision, Our Future: Healthy and Happy Communities.

■ A watercolor artist will be a guest speaker at the next Bedford Artists’ Club meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Laurie Hoeffel will share her process for making frameable greeting cards. The event is open to the public.

■ The University of Toledo Department of Art is offering art camps this summer for elementary through high school-aged students.

Children ages 7-13 can sign up for the morning workshop, Monster Hunters, from 9 a.m. to noon June 4-8, or the afternoon program, Art Around the World, from 1 to 4 p.m., the same days, or both programs.

High school students can sign up for morning sessions on sculpture and ceramics, or afternoon sessions on digital media, also June 4-8.
