Setting sail for fun at local yacht clubs

CATAWBA Island Club, celebrating it's 50th year, was loaded with Toledo-area folks, some of whom cruised to Put-in-Bay for the Toby Keith concert before heading back to the giant family playground on Lake Erie, with Davis-Besse in the distance making clouds in the sky.

The waters were a bit rough to start the weekend, so many boats remained docked, and owners were glad after hearing about the stormy adventures the big yachts encountered. But there was plenty to do including golfing, swimming, playing pickleball, dining on fresh perch, dancing, sitting by the firepits, and watching fireworks.

SALTY dogs at Port Clinton Yacht Club loved the high winds over Labor Day weekend, especially for the club’s annual Green Island Regatta. The 110-year-old club is on the shores of Lake Erie at the mouth of the Portage River.

THE Sea Dozer 80-foot yacht owned by Julian Gerken and family hosted a cruise organized by the Toledo Yacht Club Auxiliary. The event raised $2,000 for the Toledo Yacht Club Historic Foundation. The 39 guests were greeted with champagne and Sea Dozer Sangria as they boarded to the tune of the Love Boat theme. As the ship parted, the Gilligan’s Island theme was played, which drew laughs. After cruising around Turtle Island and out to Lake Erie, the yacht stopped at the Toledo Harbor Lighthouse for champagne and sunset pictures.

TOLEDO Country Club on the Maumee River had a Family Field Day and Fireworks Party. It was extra special as they were rained out on July 4 weekend. Members enjoyed the pool and played golf and tennis, then dined on picnic foods as children enjoyed games before the fireworks.
