On the Town: Pawvillion brings together good food, good friends, good cause

PAWVILLION to benefit the Toledo Area Humane Society featuring celebrity chef Sara Moulton at Tantara Farm, the home of Susan and Allan Block, chairman of Block Communications Inc., parent company of The Blade, raised at least $60,000.

Cocktails and passed hors d’oeuvres were in the front lawn under shade trees that held sparkling chandeliers. Gadding were Tom McHugh and Jeannie Hylant, Barbara Oostra, Kathleen Ryan, John and Dalia Longthorne, Meg Ressner, Marianne Ballas and John Slavens, Mary Saddemi, Patrick and Ellen Wise, Mary Lou and Phil Rudolph, Jr., mayoral candidate Wade Kapszukiewicz, and board chairman Tim Bublick and wife Peggy.

Emcee Steve Heaven, Toledo Area Humane Society president and CEO, welcomed everyone. Mrs. Block introduced special guest Otis, a rescued pit bull adopted by Megan Newcomer and Jarod Mathewson. “Tonight’s event is for the animals!” said a tearfully emotional Mrs. Block, who has three rescue dogs, three rescue cats, and three rescue pigs.

Before the auction by Richard Leonard and Rick Kiger started, chef Moulton, a Julia Child protege who is host of public television’s Sara’s Weeknight Meals, said she is impressed with Toledo. She visited the Toledo Museum of Art and ate at Tony Packo’s, where she signed a bun. Auctioned off were two sets of her four cookbooks, including the recently published Home Cooking 101: How to Make Everything Taste Better. Susan Ello went home with a set.

Also up for auction were a three-month Lexus of Toledo lease, in-home dining with chef Scott Pierce of Tree City Catering, who assisted with the evening’s excellent edibles, and a Pet of the Year 2018 offer. Jim Moore and Mrs. Block tied, so their rescue dogs will be in the limelight next year. Raise Your Paw to donate raised more than $14,000, which was matched by Mr. and Mrs. Block.

The fabulous feast for 200 was indoors and outside under chandelier-lit tents next to the lighted pool. Seen were Michael Henry, Shelly and Brent Rice, Julie and Craig Hagenbuch, Dr. Tom and Traci Schwann, Dr. Ameer and Megan Kabour, Erika and Tim Yoder, Rick and Andrea Youssef, and chef Moulton’s husband, Bill Adler.

Mmm! Shrimp and scallop terrine on butter lettuce with avocado, sunflower seeds and grapefruit vinaigrette, red wine-braised beef short ribs with scalloped potatoes and roasted brussels sprouts, and french apple tart with caramel ice cream.

Also seen were Jeff and Alyce Juby, event chairman, Teresa and Larry Beebe, Dr. BJ Wood, Phillip and Shelly Kennedy, and Dr. Susan and Tim Pontius and Dr. Tom and Deb Mowery.

Appetites sated, a lighted driveway led guests past the lighted tennis courts to the valet. Parting gifts were doggie biscuits by Penta Career Center Culinary Arts II students.

GOLF events raised funds for charity right up into the first week or so of fall.

PUTTS Fur Mutts Golf Outing and Putt Putt Event to benefit the Puppy Rescue Mission raised $20,000, according to event chairmen Jill Borkowski and Melissa Cogar.

Honored guests were TSgt. Sean McGrew and his dog Sandy Paws, Travis Huelsebusch and his dog Sky Weasel, and Lauren and Ray Knight and their dog King.

The event, at Bedford Hills Golf Club, included contests, games, raffles, Panera Bread bagels, Biggby coffee, a dessert bar for humans, doggie bags for pets, Best Buy “Tail” Gate area with big-screen TVs for football, a silent auction, and dinner by Outback Steakhouse Toledo.

THE 20th annual George Mancy Memorial Invitational Golf Outing at Highland Meadows Golf Club raised more than $10,000, bringing the total since its inception to more than $250,000 for the Anne Grady Services for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. After golf, dinner was at Shorty’s Back Forty.

John Mancy, Lee English, and the Mancy family received a proclamation from Mayor Paula Hicks-Hudson. John Mancy, Sr., passed on the care of the golf outing to his sons and nephews, including Gus Mancy, chairman, and co-chairmen Mike Mancy and Nick Mancy. Emcee Candace Bishop, led the raffle and silent auction.

Top teams were Waterford Bank (first), Telesystem (second), Heidelberg Distributing Co. (third), and John Walsh (fourth).

STONE Oak Country Club’s 21st Rally for the Cure raised $9,500 for the Susan G Komen Northwest Ohio Toledo Race for the Cure. That brings the total since the event’s inception to more than $200,000.

Event chairmen were Kim Hamilton, Linda Wooddell, Barb Malhoit, Marilyn Bender, Sue Westerheide, Anita Melby, and Chris Hall.

• 24th annual Aurora Golf Classic presented by Owens Corning at Toledo Country Club in honor of the late Joe Rychnovsky — $10,000 for Aurora Project Inc.

• Toledo Ballet’s Tutu Golf Classic at Stone Oak Country Club — more than $4,500.

• Joe Dowdell Memorial Summer Solstice Golf Marathon presented by Cooper Smith at Highland Meadows — $4,300 for Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, Toledo Area Humane Society, and the Sylvania Northview Hockey Team.

• Tee Off For Teal Karen Creque Golf Memorial at the Legacy Golf Club for Ovarian Cancer Connection— $15,000.

• Tee It Up for Kids at the Legacy Golf Club — raised$2,000 for Diabetes Youth Services.

• Veterans Education Fund Golf Outing at Heather Downs Country Club — supports the George E. Prokos Veterans Education Fund, which gives $5,000 each year to a veteran for education.

• Mountain Mentors golf event at Riverby Hills Golf Club — $14,000.
