Ohio State plays angrily, crushes No. 13 MSU

COLUMBUS — Seven days of dissection and well-deserved criticism came to a rolling boil Saturday at Ohio Stadium.

Ohio State was angry, and the Buckeyes played like it.

In a squabble for first place in the Big Ten’s East Division, No. 11 Ohio State bullied No. 13 Michigan State from the start and never let up in a 48-3 victory. The Buckeyes’ running game bludgeoned the top rushing defense in the Big Ten and their defense overwhelmed MSU’s offense. FULL STORY ■ OSU NOTEBOOK: BUCKEYES RUN WILD

Briggs: Ohio State offers reminder of what might have been

COLUMBUS — I’m not sure if Ohio State’s wire-to-wire liquidation of Michigan State was more exhilarating or dispiriting.

More than anything, a 48-3 win that unofficially clinched the Big Ten East title and a lifetime of what-ifs reminded a frozen crowd at Ohio Stadium of the possibilities the Buckeyes booted away. FULL COLUMN

Michigan wins — but doesn’t impress — against Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — It was showdown Saturday in college football, with seven games between ranked opponents. A playoff shakeup seemed imminent with each passing second.

The Capital Beltway did not play host to one of those games. Michigan and Maryland are outside the fringe of college football’s national championship race, and that fact won’t change. Thousands of empty seats at Byrd Stadium were all one needed to see to realize that. The snoozefest of a game was another indicator.

Michigan beat the Terrapins 35-10 in a forgettable display of apathy. Neither team established a rhythm on an afternoon that could have injected a sizeable dose of confidence into the Wolverines. FULL STORY ■ UM NOTES: TIGHT ENDS SPEARHEAD MICHIGAN PASSING GAME

Toledo men top St. Joseph’s in opener

Junior Jaelan Sanford and the University of Toledo men’s basketball team put on a shooting clinic Saturday, as the Rockets came away with a 98-87 season-opening win against St. Joseph’s.

Sanford had a stellar all-around night with a career-high 31 points, a career-high eight assists, and no turnovers. Sanford was 11-of-16 from the field, 4-of-6 from the 3-point line, and 5-of-6 from the free throw line. FULL STORY/PHOTO GALLERY

Baylis, McLain guide BGSU over Lake Superior State

BOWLING GREEN — After the Bowling Green State University hockey team struggled offensively in a 2-2 tie Friday with Lake Superior State, coach Chris Bergeron challenged his upperclassmen to provide some offense.

    That message was received Saturday.

Junior Stephen Baylis and senior Mitch McLain each scored a pair of goals as the Falcons claimed a 5-2 victory against the Lakers at the Slater Family Ice Arena. FULL STORY
