COLUMBUS — Ohio State has filled the lone vacancy on its coaching staff with Taver Johnson, who will return for a second stint with the Buckeyes.

OSU announced Tuesday that Johnson will serve as the cornerbacks coach for the 2018 season.

Johnson will replace Kerry Coombs, who departed OSU to accept a position with the NFL’s Tennessee Titans.

A Cincinnati native, Johnson will serve in the same role he held at Ohio State from 2007-11.

Since then, Johnson has made stops at Arkansas and Purdue, and most recently he was the defensive coordinator at Temple.

Johnson was a graduate assistant at Notre Dame in 1999, where current Buckeyes coach Urban Meyer also was on the coaching staff.

Ohio State said in a release “additional responsibilities” could be added to Johnson’s role at a later date.

“I’ve known Taver for a long time, going back to our days at Notre Dame, and I think he is a terrific coach and person,” Meyer said in a prepared statement. “He’ll do an excellent job coaching our cornerbacks and mentoring the young men in our program.”
