BOWLING GREEN — The Bowling Green State University baseball team scored two runs in the first inning Sunday and held on to beat Ohio University 3-1 in Mid-American Conference play at Steller Field, giving longtime Falcons coach Danny Schmitz his 700th win at the school.
A native of Ferndale, Mich., Schmitz is second all-time among Mid-American Conference coaches in wins, trailing only the 791 of Fred Decker of Western Michigan from 1976-2004.
The former Toledo Mud Hen is in the midst of his 28th season at BGSU. He has led the Falcons to three NCAA tournament appearances.
The Falcons (6-17) won two of three games during the weekend against the Bobcats (12-10) to open MAC play. Starter Tyler Anderson (2-4) allowed one run in 5⅔ innings, while Kody Brown got the save with 3⅓ scoreless innings.
