Monroe County’s jobless rate higher in January

MONROE — The Monroe County unemployment rate for January rose to 4.6 percent, up from 4.4 percent in December, a Michigan report released Thursday shows.

The county jobless rate, which is unadjusted for seasonal factors, is higher than a year earlier and than the state rate of 5.2 percent, which is seasonally adjusted, according to the Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget. The county had 3,500 people unemployed, up 800 from the month before, and 72,900 employed, down 600 from the month before, the report shows.

State officials said jobless rates increased in January from December in all 17 metro areas.
