The Board of Education accepted his resignation Wednesday. Mr. O’Shea had informed members of his intent to leave two weeks ago. He will wrap up his duties July 31, and the board is expected to quickly begin the search for his successor.

Mr. O’Shea, 66, said the timing was right for him to leave, though he’ll miss the school community, which he considers “family.”

The school board scheduled a 4 p.m. March 15 meeting to hear proposals from two groups that the board could tap to lead the search for a new superintendent: the Toledo-based Educational Service Center of Lake Erie West and the Columbus-based Ohio School Boards Association.

Mr. O’Shea, who lives in Springfield Township, has been employed by the district 18 years, first as a middle school assistant principal. He has also been the high school principal, director of curriculum and instruction, and assistant superintendent — a post he held from 2008-14.

Before coming to Springfield, he worked for Toledo Public Schools. He started his career in private business after graduating from Ohio University. He also was an adjunct professor at the University of Toledo and Bowling Green State University.

Mr. O’Shea received a doctorate in education from BGSU in 2006.
