Karen Schoenberger has been a wonderful addition to the faculty of Ottawa Hills High School. When designing lessons, Karen’s compassion for every type of learner is evident. She strives to encourage all students to work to their greatest potential. We deeply appreciate the way she has shaped the experience for our senior English students. In addition, Karen has also empowered students to make important changes to our student newspaper and has established important community partnerships. Karen has reached out to the Toledo Blade to assist with the electronic distribution of the Arrowhead, our high school newspaper. Also, she has helped students make meaningful connections with local organizations and companies for Professional Networking and Communication, a new course that will be rolled out second semester.

Karen has played an essential role in the awards and accolades Ottawa Hills has recently earned. In the last five years, our school district is the only one in the state to receive an All-A report card from the Ohio Department of Education for growth and achievement and we have done this three years in a row. In addition, we were ranked #1 in Ohio and #45 in the nation according to Newsweek’s 2015 America’s Top High Schools. We also made the College Board’s Annual AP Honor roll in 2016 and 2017. In addition, for three of the past four years, all of Karen’s AP English Literature students have scored a three or better on the AP exam. Karen and her colleagues have been integral to the success of the school.

“Karen Schoenberger encourages students to think critically, interpret literature from a variety of perspectives, and to develop an authentic voice when writing or speaking,” said Benjamin McMurray, Principal. “Karen is a passionate teacher who helps students understand the human condition through thoughtful examination of art, literature, philosophy, music, and culture. We are fortunate to have her on our faculty.”
