UT medical student named Samoff Fellow

A third-year University of Toledo medical student is one of nine students in the United States to be selected as a 2018-19 Sarnoff Fellow and will spend a year studying in a biomedical research facility.

During his fellowship Rahul Mital plans to study “cardiogenesis, which is the development of the heart in the embryo, and how to use gene therapy as a potential treatment for congenital heart disease,” according to a statement from UT announcing his award.

He plans to work one day in the field of pediatric cardiology.

“This is a very competitive, prestigious award,” Dr. Christopher Cooper, dean of the medical college, said.
