Confident Start girls roll to victory
Ten days after finally ending their five-year losing streak against recent City League power Rogers, the Start Spartans appear confident and ready for the challenges ahead as Ohio’s fifth-ranked Division I girls basketball team.
The latest test came Monday at home, as the Spartans (11-1) kicked off the MLK Legacy Classic with an impressive 71-53 victory against the Parkersburg (W.Va.) Big Reds.
Start’s senior-dominated lineup, which put four scorers in double figures led by guard Mariah White’s 22 points and nine rebounds, got hot fast in jumping out to a quick 6-0 lead and never trailing. FULL STORY | PHOTO GALLERY
Waite boys handle pressure, Perrysburg
Waite is a team with plenty of experience in close games this season, and the Indians put that knowledge to good use Monday in a 51-47 nonleague boys basketball victory against Perrysburg in the MLK Legacy Classic at Start.
“I was just thinking, ‘Let this clock run out,’” Waite coach Adam Rodriguez said of his team surviving a late Yellow Jackets rally. “It couldn’t run out fast enough. But, our kids have been in close games all year, and it showed today.
“Every day we tell them, ‘We’re right there. We can play with anybody.’ One day, it’s this thing we’re missing. Another day, its this thing. But, if we put it all together, we’re right there.” FULL STORY | PHOTO GALLERY
Start’s boys can’t get handle on Hazel Park
Start played host to the MLK Legacy Classic on Monday and wanted nothing better than to end the day with a victory.
However, Hazel Park (Mich.) traveled the hour-long drive south to Toledo with plans for making the trip worthwhile by returning home with a victory.
Hazel Park did just that, holding off Start 76-68.
Caleb Allen and Keishawn Fair kept the Spartans (8-4) close by combining for 42 points. Jacoby Myers added 11. FULL STORY
Slow start dooms Scott boys in defeat
A slow start led to a rough Monday for Scott against Cleveland Benedictine in the MLK Legacy Classic at Start.
More than three minutes elapsed before the Bulldogs finally scored against the Bengals, who cruised to a 74-49 victory in the third of four games played in the annual tournament.
Despite the loss, Scott coach Fred Coogler saw reasons to be encouraged about the effort by the Bulldogs (1-10). FULL STORY
