Northview, other golf teams attempt to qualify for state tourney

Kunkel helped Wildcats to section title

Sectional champion Northview, led by senior medalist Jack Kunkel, bids to qualify for the Division I boys state golf tournament Thursday in district competition at Red Hawk Run Golf Course in Findlay.

Joining the Wildcats in that quest will be the teams from St. John’s Jesuit, Clay and St. Francis de Sales. The top two teams from the district field advance to the state tourney Oct. 20-21 at Ohio State University’s Scarlet Course.

Also qualifying will be the top two individual placers from non-qualifying teams.

The Division II and III boys, and Division II girls, state tournaments will be held Friday and Saturday.

In D-II boys, coach Mike Rosebrook’s Archbold team of seniors Brandon Miller and Trevor Rupp, juniors A.J. Mahnke and Mitch Grosjean, and sophomore Kade Kern, will be competing at the NorthStar Golf Club in Sunbury.

Competing as an individual in D-II will be Central Catholic senior Jack Grombacher.

Two areas boys teams will be in the D-III state field at OSU’s Scarlet Course.

Under coach Tom Duris, the Ottawa Hills team of seniors Jack Yark and David Rodriguez, and juniors Nick Durfee, Andrew Lyon and Eli Zinck will compete along with coach Eric Heitkamp’s Van Buren team of seniors Hunter Foltz and Brandon Wehrle, and juniors Connor Ohlrich, Noah Frederick and Quentin Weddell.

Individual qualifiers in D-III include Maumee Valley junior Craig Jacobs and Woodmore senior Mitchell Miller.

In the D-II girls tournament at the OSU Gray Course, competing as individuals will be freshmen Sydney Leyerle of Gibsonburg and Kyleigh Dull of Lakota, and junior Caroline Dayton of Ottawa Hills. Leyerle was the district medalist with a 72.
