High school notebook: Genoa's DeStazio to retire

Genoa’s Mike DeStazio will retire after 17 seasons as a girls head basketball coach following the season.

He also spent 13 years as an assistant coach. He plans to remain as Genoa’s boys golf coach in the fall.

“This is my 30th year of coaching basketball,” DeStazio said. “I’m at a time in my life that I want to slow down and enjoy my retirement years.

“I want to thank Genoa Schools and the community for making the last eight years memorable. I also want to thank the Woodmore community for my 22 years there. What I will miss most is the players and the friendships.”

DeStazio, 63, has posted an overall record of 250-122, combining his nine seasons at Woodmore (142-59) and eight at Genoa (108-63). His Woodmore teams won two Suburban Lakes League titles (1995, 1997), and his Genoa squad added a Northern Buckeye Conference crown in 2016.

His deepest tournament run came in 2002, when Woodmore reached the Division III regionals. His teams have reached districts in 13 of his previous 16 seasons.

DeStazio spent 28 years as an educator at the Penta Career Center and was a Woodmore school board member from 2003-14. He and his wife, Connie, operate DeSTAZio’s, a pizza business in Elmore.

GYMNASTICS: Notre Dame captured its first Three Rivers Athletic Conference gymnastics team championship Friday at the Exceleration Gymnastcis Center in Toledo.

The Eagles posted 131.850 team points to top runner-up Whitmer’s 130.150. Findlay was third at 126.550.

Top individual honors went to Whitmer’s Victoria Harder, who won the vault (9.100), the bars (8.650), and the floor exercise (9.450), and she placed third on the beam (8.750). That combined work also made Harder the TRAC all-around champion at 35.950.

Notre Dame’s Maddie Humbles was the all-around runner-up at 35.150, Whitmer’s Rachel Krotzer was third in all-around at 34.050, St. Ursula’s Mackenzie Kauffman was fourth at 33.000, and Findlay’s Kaitlin Hardwich took fifth at 32.700.

Krotzer was also the winner on the beam at 9.150.

In the Northern Lakes League gymnastics tournament, host Perrysburg took the team title was a score of 135.300 at the Perrysburg Gymnastic YMCA last Saturday.

Springfield was the team runner-up at 132.925, and Maumee took third at 121.500.

Individually, NLL gymnast of the year honors were earned by Maumee’s Alyssa Delffs, who won two events plus the all-around title. Delffs won the bar with a score of 9.000, was first on the beam at 8.900, and took the all-around crown with total score of 35.050.

Bailey Lewicz of Perrysburg was second in the all-around at 34.550, Olivia Holley of Springfield was third at 34.225, Caitlin Madigan of Perrysburg was fourth at 33.835, and Kara Frantz of Springfield as fifth at 33.400.

Frantz won the floor exercise with a score of 9.000, and Madigan took the vault title with a 9.100.

Delffs, Lewicz, Holley, Madigan, and Frantz were joined on the All-NLL first team by Springfield’s Sophia Catera.

BASKETBALL: Montpelier senior boys basketball standout Kolden Uribes is just 67 points from becoming the school’s all-time leading scorer.

Uribes enters the Locomotives’ game at Edon on Friday night with 1,459 points. Through 18 regular-season games, he is leading the northwest Ohio area in scoring at 23.6 points per game.

The Locos (8-10) conclude the regular season with home games versus Maumee Valley on Saturday, Fayette on Monday, and Fairview on Feb. 22.

Montpelier’s career points leader is Hannah Blake, who totaled 1,525 points for the Locos’ girls team (2012-16).

In Tuesday night’s 75-30 home win against Springfield in Northern Lakes League boys play, Southview senior guard Ryan Fries needed 28 points to reach the 1,000-point career milestone, and got exactly that in leading the first-place Cougars (19-1 overall, 12-0 NLL) to victory.

With a 52-9 win against Hilltop in Buckeye Border Conference girls basketball action last Thursday, Pettisville moved to 11-10 this season, and the Blackbirds delivered career victory No. 300 to 22nd-year head coach Jason Waldvogel.

During his run at Pettisville, Waldvogel (300-195), a 1988 Stryker graduate, has guided the Blackbirds to seven BBC titles and three district championships.

HOCKEY: With the regular season concluded, hockey has moved to district tournament play this week, with the quarterfinal round set for Saturday at Sylvania Tam-O-Shanter.

At 1 p.m. Saturday, Northwest Hockey Conference Red Division champion St. Francis de Sales, Ohio’s second-ranked team, opens with a quarterfinal test against the winner of Wednesday’s first-round matchup between Maumee and Whitmer.

At 3 p.m., Findlay takes on the winner of Thursday’s first-round contest between Anthony Wayne and Perrysburg.

At 5 p.m., seventh-ranked Northview battles Bowling Green, and the quarterfinals conclude Saturday with a 7 p.m. game between St. John’s Jesuit and the winner of Thursday’s first-round game between Clay and Southview.

The winners of the 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. quarterfinals will meet in a district semifinal at Tam-O-Shanter on Feb. 23 at 7 p.m., and the other two quarterfinal winners will match up in a 7 p.m. district semifinal there on Feb. 24.

The district championship game is scheduled for March 2 at 7 p.m. at Tam-O-Shanter, with the champion advancing to the state semifinals at Nationwide Arena in Columbus on March 9 at 10 a.m. The state championship game is March 10 at 2 p.m. there.
