Officials send mixed messages

3/18/2017

When will the city of Toledo listen to what they are saying to us?

They say that they are concerned about Kroger building at Secor and Monroe, with one of the major issues being green space.

Need I remind them of what the area for the new ProMedica parking garage on Summit Street looks like? They have taken all the green space land that was used for parties, families, and events and have paved over it.

My wife and I drove downtown recently to see the progress of the buildings, and we were appalled at how the entire green space area has been demolished and covered.

The city should listen to the song “Big Yellow Taxi” by Joni Mitchell: “Don’t it always seem to go/That you don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone/They paved paradise/And put up a parking lot.”

Only if it suits and benefits the city will it sell off its property. If the city owned the Secor and Monroe property, the city would have sold it to Kroger in a “New York minute” and, as they always do, at a great financial loss.

I know what a lot of you will be saying to me: “it is impossible for the politicians to hear what they are saying when they are talking out both sides of their mouths.”

Take a stand against bad food

The Blade’s March 15 editorial, ‘‘Attack the fat epidemic,” was spot on. We must stop blaming the fast-food industry and take full responsibility for what we put into our bodies.

We know that the food industry doesn’t care what we eat as long as it sells and increases its bottom line. It’s time for us to take a stand and be more conscious of the garbage they are selling us and the garbage we consume and make exercising a priority.

It’s time to get angry and send a message to the food companies who sell junk and let them know we are not going to buy it anymore.
