Stand up to unions on Kroger

3/19/2017

As a citizen of Toledo my entire life, I love this city and have always had its interests at heart.

However, over the years I have always wondered why Toledo is unable to be progressive and forward-thinking.

Having seen comparable cities such as Pittsburgh, Indianapolis, and even Detroit, find their way back from a downward spiral, why is our city so behind? What is the problem?

I have finally realized that it is the unions who speak for Toledo. They and the government officials whom they control are responsible for what Toledo is today. Case in point, we have a beautiful piece of property in West Toledo owned by the nuns of Notre Dame that will also succumb to the control of the unions.

Here is another urban oasis that will be eliminated and turned into a parking lot because a business wants to develop it and “guarantee” jobs for unionized employees. I understand that we need our people to be employed, but this should not result in the bastardization of our town.

Please, city council, I hope that all of you rethink your responsibilities as members of this important position you hold. You took an oath of office to perform your duties for the betterment of the city, not to patronize the unions who will help you get re-elected.

UT must play role in Secor solution

The University of Toledo has been conspicuously absent from the Secor Road widening discussion. According to the DGL Consulting Engineers’ presentation to the Ottawa Hills Village Council on December 15 last year, the traffic count on Secor south of Kenwood was 13,050 in the summer of 2014, when UT was not in session and 21,020 in November, 2016, when UT was in session.

UT is the largest contributor to traffic on Secor. It should not hide in the shadows while 12 or more historic Ottawa Hills homes are being threatened with demolition.

The next Ottawa Hills Village Council meeting is scheduled for Monday at 7:30 p.m. at Hope Lutheran Church. I invite UT officials to attend and work with the community to solve the Secor problem.
