To the Editor: Drug test those on unemployment

10/9/2017

Recently The Blade featured articles on firms trying to hire employees and being unable to do so because of drug use.

In one case, the issue curtailed expansion of the firm, possibly resulting in an economic impact on the local economy. It is not uncommon to require drug testing of potential employees who pay taxes and unemployment insurance.

Many of those seeking employment are on the welfare or unemployment rolls. Isn’t it about time we start drug testing those who draw welfare or unemployment benefits?

If the people who provide for these funds are required to be tested, why not test the recipients? It might even prevent a few opioid deaths. If we continue the system as is, those who support the system are subsidizing drug use.
