To the editor: Let’s drop conspiracy theories

Kirk Walters’ Feb. 4 editorial cartoon promotes a conspiracy theory.

The cartoon suggests that Hillary Clinton, Christopher Steele with his infamous dossier, the FBI, and the FISA courts are all in cahoots. And to do what exactly? They’re all out to get President Donald Trump. That’s what Mr. Trump is saying, as well.

Mr. Trump seems to like conspiracies. For five years before his election, Mr. Trump pushed the “birther” conspiracy, which argued that President Barack Obama was not an American citizen. Mr. Trump also propagated a conspiracy that 5,000,000 votes in the 2016 were cast illegally.

Let’s stick with reality over conspiracies. It’s a safer bet.

Mayor sets city on right course

I write with enthusiasm and optimism as I reflect on the significant changes already addressed and visible in our city under our new mayor and his administration.

After less than a month in office: potholes are being repaired; dead trees and limbs at Walbridge Park and the Anthony Wayne Trail are being removed; buildings surrounding Southwyck are being sold and will be utilized; 500 workers are being relocated downtown on Madison Avenue; and there is progress with the Memorandum of Understanding regarding regional water.

The new administrators are energetic and inspiring. And the “Not in My House” initiative, which this office has pitched to several former mayors and chiefs, has been adopted by this mayor to simply and economically utilize friends and family to give up the guns and drugs.

Help is finally here.

Let citizens savor tax cut

The ink is barely dry on my first paycheck with the new tax cut, and already the Maumee City Schools and the Lucas County Commissioners (for a new jail) have their hands out asking for more money (Feb. 2, “Proposed new site for jail unveiled”).

Thanks, but no thanks. Time to finally be able to save some extra money.
