Apples for Everyone to benefit SeaGate Food Bank

Johnston Fruit Farm, at 790 U.S. Highway 20A in Swanton, is hosting its 9th annual Apples for Everyone event to benefit the SeaGate Food Bank of Northwest Ohio, which serves more than 400 food programs for those in need. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sept. 23, help pick fruit that will be donated to the food bank, and also enjoy homemade doughnuts, hayrides, crafts, live music, and a petting zoo. Be sure to pick some apples for your own family, as well.

Ohio vs. Michigan at Zia’s

At 6 p.m. on Sept. 26, Ohio takes on Michigan in a wine taste-off being held at Zia’s Italian Restaurant, 20 Main St. Enjoy appetizers and some friendly competition on the patio while sampling 10 wines.

Representing Michigan will be Leelanau Cellars’ Witches Brew and Concord wine, and Chateau Grand Traverse’s Late Harvest Riesling, Ship of Fools, and Cherry wine. For Ohio, the players will be Mon Ami’s Spiced and Concord wines, and Firelands Winery’s Riesling, Pinot Grigio, and Raspberry Riesling Champagne.

Sofia Quintero pig roast rescheduled

The Sofia Quintero Art and Cultural Center’s 2nd annual Pig Roast has been rescheduled from its original date of Sept. 1 to Sept. 29 from 6 to 9 p.m. The event will be hosted in partnership with Club Taino Puertorriqueno and held at the center, at 1225 Broadway.

Fall Frenzy at the Quarry Chili Cook-off

It’s time for the 2nd annual Fall Frenzy at the Quarry, being hosted on Oct. 21 by the village of Whitehouse and Metroparks Toledo. There will be lots of fun outdoor activities, including a chili cook-off scheduled for 11 a.m. in the shelter house at Blue Creek Metropark, 7215 Providence St.

Each contestant is required to provide two gallons of chili, which the public will vote on to choose a favorite. Votes will cost $1 apiece, and the winner will receive half of the collected proceeds. The remaining money will be used to support the Veteran’s Memorial Park Fund.

Columbus Mac and Cheese Festival

From 4 to 8 p.m. on Oct. 6, feast on everyone’s favorite comfort food at the 2nd annual Columbus Mac and Cheese Festival; some of Columbus’ most noted chefs will offer creative twists on the classic dish. This event, to benefit the adolescent and young adult programs at the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center, Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital, and Richard J. Solove Research Institute, will be held at the Easton Town Center, 160 Easton Town Center, in Columbus.

General admission tickets cost $25 per adult and $10 per child. VIP tickets cost $100 per person and will grant access to an open bar, additional food options, and seating.
