Culinary students to serve scholarship dinner

At 5:30 p.m. Dec. 7, head to the Penta Career Center, 9301 Buck Rd., Perrysburg, for the school’s It’s VEGAS! Scholarship Dinner and Silent Auction. Penta’s culinary arts students are working with chef instructors Janea Makowski, Jim Rhegness, and Sarah Sadlier to prepare the food.

Culinary I students will offer barbecue ribs and Asian cole slaw as well as a sushi bar and ramen noodle station. Celebrities such as Bobby Flay, Giada de Laurentiis, Gordon Ramsay, Guy Fieri, and Toledo’s own Susan Feniger have served as the inspiration for Culinary II students, who will prepare such delicacies as the chefs’ Chicken Marsala Meatballs, Spice-rubbed Pork Tenderloin, Pepperoni Bread Sticks, Beef Wellington, Lobster Ravioli, and a gourmet taco bar. And Culinary III students will provide a raw seafood bar, a bacon station, and a cheesecake assortment.

Tickets for the dinner cost $75 per person or $500 for a table of eight. Musician Dave Carpenter will offer live entertainment; and, in keeping with the theme, guests can play games and win prizes. Silent auction items include creations from Penta students and donations from area businesses. Proceeds from the event will benefit a general scholarship fund and the Hirzel Scholarship Fund, both of which help with post-secondary tuition or tools.

You can help pack Thanksgiving boxes

Food for Thought, which helps to feed those in need through mobile food pantries and Saturday morning picnic lunches, is seeking volunteers to help with the preparation and delivery of 60 holiday food boxes. Packing will be done from 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday at the organization’s offices, 316 Adams St., with drop-offs to families being made Nov. 20.

Celebrate diversity at 419Taste event

From 5 to 6:30 p.m. Friday, the Toledo School for the Arts, 333 14th St., is hosting the Women of Toledo’s 419Taste, a celebration of diversity being offered in partnership with Welcome Toledo-Lucas County.

This first-time event will share a varied array of samples: mini pies from Al Habib Market; steamed buns with red bean and chicken curry fillings from Asian Grocery; grape leaves and chicken kabob bites from Grape Leaf Diner; Magic Wok’s pad Thai, lo mein, and fried rice; chickpea salad from Phoenicia Cuisine; So Sweet Lebanese and French Pastries’ mini cakes and baklava; Star of India’s vegetable samosas; and spring rolls, egg rolls, and crab rangoon from Toledo Thai Restaurant. In addition, the TSA Culinary Club will be offering food demonstrations, and there will be an education station dedicated to the herbs and spices of China, India, Japan, and Lebanon.

After the tasting, guests are invited to the school’s Attic Theater for the Senior High One Acts featuring advanced acting students.

Don’t despair: chef Rob Campbell, a favorite in Toledo, is staying on at the new Mancy’s Ideal Original Kitchen and Bar, 5333 Monroe St., which is now open in the location of his previous restaurant, Revolution Grille.
