Donations needed for annual Toledo Hemp Center cookout

The Toledo Hemp Center will host its annual Free Community Cookout from 12 to 5 p.m. Aug. 5 at 3045 W. Alexis Rd. The event is a celebration for area residents, and assistance from many people is required to make it a success each year.

Donations are being sought for food items, including 200 hamburger patties, 300 hamburger buns and slices of cheese, 30 large bags of chips, potato salad, baked beans, bottles of ketchup and mustard, and assorted desserts. Serving items (500 paper plates, napkins, forks, spoons, knives) are also needed, as are charcoal and ice.

At the cookout, it is hoped that 75 bookbags full of school supplies can be distributed. Donations of backpacks, pencils, erasers, scissors, 24-pack crayons, rulers, pencil cases, pens, filler paper, highlighters, colored pencils, and washable markers are needed.

Contributions are being accepted until Aug. 3 and can be dropped off at the Toledo Hemp Center, 815 Phillips Ave., during business hours (10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday)

Wine tastings

Celebrate National Parks and Recreation Month at the Bottle Shop at Mancy’s Italian, 5453 Monroe St.

On Thursday, the Off the Beaten Path wine tasting will benefit the Toledo MetroParks. July 19’s sampling event will benefit Ohio State Parks, with offerings of red and white wines that are best served chilled. Both events will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Gift baskets are being raffled off each Thursday in July, with $5 tickets available at the store throughout the month. Ticket sales will benefit local, state, and national parks.

Chicken festival

The Delta Chicken Festival is slated for next weekend.

Food, friends, and fun are all waiting at the Delta Chicken Festival 2018, being held Friday, Saturday, and July 15. This year’s theme is Willy Wonka: A World of Pure Imagination.

The famous chicken dinners cost $10 for a grilled half-chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, a roll, dessert, and a drink. Without the sides, the chicken on its own is $6. Eat at the festival or take-out service will be available.

In addition to the festival’s starring menu item, there will be hamburgers and milkshakes as well as Marco’s Pizza. The 5K Delta Chicken Run; a car, truck, and motorcycle show; baseball, soccer, flag football, and basketball tournaments; and live music, a parade, a bingo tent, a craft sale, a garage sale, and fireworks will add to the festivities.

On July 15, non-denominational services will be offered at 11 a.m. at the food pavilion.
