Soprano featured in symphony concert

Soprano Rachele Gilmore will join the Toledo Symphony in performing Mahler’s epic ‘Symphony No. 4’ on Friday and Saturday at the Peristyle.

The next Toledo Symphony Classics concert presents soprano Rachele Gilmore in Mahler’s epic Symphony No. 4. The work is built around a single song, “Das himmlishce Leben (A Child’s Vision of Heaven).”

Gilmore has established herself as one of the nation’s leading coloratura sopranos, performing this season with the Lyric Opera of Kansas City, the Austin Opera, and the Hawaii Opera.

She replaces Heidi Grant Murphy who was originally contracted to sing the engagement. Also on the program are Wagner’s Prelude to Tristan and Isolde and Schoenberg’s Variations for Orchestra, op. 31. Wagner first introduced tonal ambiguity to Germanic symphonic repertoire — a concept, which ironically, had its ultimate fulfillment in the slated Schoeberg.

■ The Voice Faculty of the University of Toledo are the next performers on the free Great Performances in the Great Gallery Series at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Toledo Museum of Art, 2445 Monroe St. More information is available at 419-255-8000 or toledomuseum.org.

■ Toledo Symphony cellist Damon Coleman and UT pianist Michael Boyd join forces for the next installment of the St. Tim’s Discovers Concert Series. The program includes Bach’s Cello Suite No. 1 in G Major, Lawrence Brown’s Five Spirituals, and Rachmaninoff’s Sonata for Cello and Piano in G minor. ■ Former Toledo organist Brian Rotz, director of Music at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Carlisle, Pa., returns to town to present a free recital of Celtic-inspired organ music at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Monroe Street United Methodist Church, 3613 Monroe St. More information is available by calling 419-473-1167, ext. 230.

■ Students from the Toledo School for the Arts Dance Studio present Xhibit13, a performance of works inspired by No. 13, celebrating Xhibit’s 13th anniversary at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Valentine Theatre, 410 Adams St. Tickets are $10-$22 and available by calling 419-246-8732, ext. 225, or 419-242-2787.

■ The 10th annual Douglas Wayland Chamber Music competition at the BGSU College of Musical Arts concludes this weekend with the finals at 3 p.m. Sunday in Bryan Recital Hall, Moore Musical Arts Center. The event is free.

■ Three performances are on offer at the Kerrytown Concert House. 

Pianist Willis Delony teams up with hornist Adam Unsworth in a program of music from classical to jazz at 8 p.m. Friday. Tickets are $5-$25.

 Pianist Pauline Martin joins violinist Eliot Heaton in a recital of American-influenced works, including a world premier of a new work by David DiChiera, at 4 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $5-$30. 

Violinist Movses Pogossian solos in Sonatas and Partita of Bach at 8 p.m. Monday. Tickets are $5-$30.

■ The University of Toledo Department of Music Community Music program is offering classes in piano and guitar. Group lessons in beginning piano are available for students in grades first through sixth; group guitar lessons are available for high school students. Piano and guitar lessons are available for adults.

Packages include six weeks of one-hour lessons and cost $60. Piano lessons are taught in the piano lab; guitars are not provided. Classes begin next week. ■ Three University of Toledo students have won honors at recent competitions. Moises Salazar advanced to the finals in the national Orpheus Vocal Competition, capturing second place overall. He won a scholarship to study in Austria this summer.

Chelsie Cree took first place at the Great Lakes Region Student Audition for the National Association of Teachers of Singing Competition and will advance to the national preliminaries.

Meridian Prall won first place in the Ohio State National Association of Teachers of Singing Competition in the Junior Women’s division.

■ Thirteen students and two faculty members from the University of Toledo School of Visual and Performing Arts traveled to China from March 4-12 for a study abroad experience titled Music Teaching and Learning in China. 

Holly Hey, assistant professor of film, and Pamela Stover, assistant professor of vocal and music education, chaperoned six music performance and education majors to study Chinese cultural arts and music education.
