Youth orchestra to premiere Will Rand piece

Guest conductor Manuel López-Gómez joins the Toledo Symphony in concert at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Peristyle.
The Toledo Symphony Youth Orchestras presents its second concert of the season this weekend under the direction of conductors Wasim Hawary and J. Patrick Barrett. The program includes music by Haydn, Bizet, Sibelius, and Mussorgsky and a world premiere of high school student Will Rand’s Gleaming Tide.
Rand, an Ottawa Hills high school student, is the principal horn in the youth orchestra philharmonic orchestra and composed the work during intensive study in composition this summer.
In addition, a preconcert recital at 1:40 p.m. will feature winners of the Toledo Symphony Youth Orchestra Solo Contest, violinists Erin Gardner and Cole Habekost.
The free youth orchestra concert begins at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Toledo Museum of Art Peristyle, 2445 Monroe St. More information at toledosymphony.com.
Also, the youth orchestra concert strings have been selected to travel to Columbus and perform at the 2018 Ohio Music Education Association Professional Development Concert in mid-February. The pedagogical conference showcases the best of Ohio music teaching programs.
■ The Toledo Symphony Classics Series delivers a program of music focused on the heavens: Strauss’s Also Sprach Zarathurstra (the theme from 2001: A Space Odyssey) and a complete performance of Gustav Holst’s The Planets. ■ The Dorothy MacKenzie Price Piano series welcomes San Francisco Conservatory pianist William Wellborn in a master class from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday and a recital at 3 p.m. Sunday.
Recital repertoire includes Haydn, Liszt, and Schubert with University of Toledo professor Michael Boyd joining for Debussy’s Petite Suite and Schubert’s Fantasy for 4 Hands. ■ The Sound of Silents film series continues with Flying Ace. Featuring an African-American cast, the Hollywood-style adventure film is based on real people who fought in World War I.
Detroit jazz bassist Marion Hayden with Alvin Wattles on piano and the Skinner organ provide the score at 7 p.m. Feb. 8 at the Peristyle, 2445 Monroe St. Tickets are free for TMA members and $5 for nonmembers and are available at toledomuseum.org.
