Harpists gather at Sauder Heritage Inn

Harpists, performers, vendors and aficionados from across 15 states and Canada convene this weekend for the 11th annual Harp Gathering in Archbold, Ohio. Participants will take part in workshops, concerts, jam sessions, and fellowship of all things harp.

As a part of the activities, three concerts are scheduled. Tapestry, harp, and acoustic guitar duo Denise and Michael Grupp-Verbon perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday. New York harpist Martha Gallagher, Latin American harpist Nicolas Carter, and San Francisco harpist Diana Rowan headline 6:30 p.m. Saturday. The Harp Gathering Mass Harp Ensemble directed by Frank Volta, followed by Seattle harpist Harper Tasche is featured 11:30 a.m. Sunday.

The public is welcome to attend any of the three concerts at Sauder Heritage Inn, 22611 State Rt. 2, Archbold. Tickets are $15 for each concert and available at the door. Tickets for any of the Gathering’s workshops may also be purchased.

■ The Sound of Silents film festival continues with the 1922 film Robin Hood starring Douglas Fairbanks. Organist Clark Wilson will provide the soundtrack at 7 p.m. May 24 at the Toledo Museum of Art Peristyle, 2445 Monroe St. Tickets are available at toledomuseum.org.

■ The SonoNovo Chamber Ensemble continues exploration of the music of the belle epoch with a free program, “The Timbral Shift: The Metamorphosis of Romanticism into Impressionism.” Violinist Cecilia Johnson, violist Susan Schreiber, and cellist Jim Anderson join forces with pianist Wayne Anthony to perform the two piano quartets of Gabriel Fauré at 3 p.m. Sunday at Great Gallery, Toledo Museum of Art, 2445 Monroe St. For more information, visit toledomuseum.org.

■ The Arts Commission of Greater Toledo’s Downtown May Art Loop features several music offerings. Trinity Episcopal Church, 316 Adams St., will feature an organ recital. Paula Brown Gallery will feature the band Twenty Twenty Four composed of current and former UT students. The Toledo Lucas County Public Library’s main building welcomes the SonoNovo Piano Duo. The “After the Loop” party at 9 p.m. at Attic on Adams, 1701 Adams St., features musical guests American Spirits and Teamonade.

■ The Sylvania Community Orchestra offers a “Spring Potpourri” concert featuring classics for children including “Disney Magic” and “Bugs Bunny’s Greatest Hits.” Nine-year-old pianist Henry Shao is the featured artist. An instrument demo will be offered from Rettig Music, and an ice cream social will follow. ■ The Bowling Green Area Community Bands offer a Cabaret Pops Concert of traditional concert band fare conducted by Thomas Headley, with the jazz band conducted by Bill Lake at 7:30 p.m. May 24 at the Bowling Green Community Schools Performing Arts Center, 530 W. Poe Rd., Bowling Green.

■ Fourteen-year-old pianist Gavin George returns to the Musical Arts Series in Port Clinton with a recital of music by Beethoven and Rachmaninoff. The program begins at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Firelands Presbyterian Church, 2626 E. Harbor Rd., Port Clinton. Tickets are $15 and available at the door; children and students are admitted for free. ■ The Warren Concert Band holds its spring concert, “Creatures and Pets,” at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Warren Woods Tower High School Auditorium, 27900 Bunert Rd., Warren, Mich. Tickets are $5 to $10 available at the door.

■ The Ann Arbor Guitar Trio hosts a CD release show at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Kerrytown Concert House, 415 N. Fourth Ave., Ann Arbor. Tickets are $10 to $15 at 734-769-2999 or kerrytownconcerthouse.com.

■ The University of Toledo School of Visual and Performing Arts will present four music workshops geared to a range of age levels.

A flute camp with Joel Tse and Amy Heritage will run June 18-22 for elementary schoolers through adult. The cost is $150 (children/half day workshop), $300 per week, or $65 per day.

A piano fusion workshop for classical and jazz pianists is offered by Michael Boyd and Tad Weed from June 25-29 for high schoolers through adult. The cost is $350; proficiency in piano is required.

Choral conducting for adults with Brad Pierson and Richard Schnipke is July 24-25. The cost is $100 for one day or $300 for three days for teachers, choral directors, and college music students.

The Toledo Summer Big Sing! is July 28 for adults. The social singing event concluding with a free concert is $25 and includes lunch and music.
