Toledo man killed by car while trying to catch loose dog

Toledo police say a pedestrian was struck and killed by a car Friday evening in South Toledo.

Paul Vandersteen, 47, of the 400 block of South Haven Road, was attempting to catch his loose dog at about 6:07 p.m. in the street on South Avenue near South Haven Road , according to a news release. He was struck by a car traveling west on South Avenue driven by Joseph Laforge, 28, of the 1600 block of Idlewood Drive, the release shows.

Mr. Vandersteen was taken to the University of Toledo Medical Center, the former Medical College of Ohio Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
