Kasich to trot out familiar theme in bid to woo voters

Speech along same lines as ’10 Ohio campaign

Ohio Gov. John Kasich will borrow a theme from his successful 2010 gubernatorial campaign for a speech he’s set to give today in New York City in his quest for the GOP presidential nomination.

Mr. Kasich will speak on the topic of “Two Paths” at 10:30 a.m. in front of the Women’s National Republican Club at the 3 West Club on West 51st St.

“Two Paths” was the title of a Kasich commercial in 2010 when he defeated Democratic Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland.

New York holds its primary a week from today. New York businessman Donald Trump is the front-runner in the primary battle, while Mr. Kasich is ahead of Texas U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, according to polls.

In his 2010 campaign video, Mr. Kasich said, “This election is about two paths: Either we stay on the same path and lose more jobs, or we take a new path and find a new way. I cut spending and balanced budgets, eliminated debt, and created jobs. With my plan, I’m going to do the same thing for Ohio.”

A preview video of the speech, circulated as part of a Kasich fund-raising appeal, suggested the speech is going to amount to an attack on both Mr. Trump and Mr. Cruz as the party’s nominee.

“There is great concern in the Republican Party that frankly if we get blown out in the fall, which I think we would with both Cruz and Trump, we would lose seats all the way from the statehouse to the courthouse,” Mr. Kasich says in the preview video. “Great leaders don’t divide people. Great leaders bring people together.”

Mr. Kasich, a distant third in delegates from state primaries and caucuses, has argued that he’s the only one of the three Republicans still in the contest who polls show is able to defeat either of the Democratic candidates, Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders.

The Kasich campaign refused to answer a question from The Blade on Monday as to what two paths Mr. Kasich will highlight in his speech.

On Wednesday, Mr. Kasich campaigns in Savage, Md., between Baltimore and Washington, becoming the first Republican candidate to visit that state, according to the Baltimore Sun. The RealClearPolitics.com average of polls has Mr. Kasich second at 24.5 percent, behind Mr. Trump with 37.5 percent in Maryland, which holds its primary on April 26.
