Lucas County Democratic Party chairman announces resignation

The Lucas County Democratic Party chairman announced his resignation Thursday, accepting a new position after three years leading the party.

Joshua Hughes, 41, said he was offered the role of vice president with the Associated General Contractors of Northwest Ohio this week. It includes contract negotiation, joint employer-management relations, and health benefits.

Mr. Hughes' last day is April 30. He will continue to serve on the county Board of Elections for the remainder of his term through next March.

“This is a unique opportunity that is too good to pass up,” Mr. Hughes said.

Part of the allure was the stability the private-sector job would entail, Mr. Hughes said.

“It wouldn't be prudent of me or fair of me to stay on as chair given my new role,” Mr. Hughes said.

The party central committee will decide who succeeds Mr. Hughes as chair. Its bylaws say any vacancy must be filled within 30 days. Mr. Hughes said this meeting will likely take place May 14 but has not been formally set.

As chairman, Mr. Hughes said he spent about 25 to 35 hours per week at party headquarters in addition to evening assignments. He said he tried to keep the position open and transparent.

Mr. Hughes said he did not have a preferred replacement but hopes his successor can build upon and grow fund-raising and win percentage.

“The better the Lucas County Democratic Party is and does, I think, the better life will be for all of us in Lucas County,” Mr. Hughes said.

County Commissioner Pete Gerken said he hopes the new leader can bring together elements of the party and aid a large Lucas County Democratic turnout for races this November.
