Day of service

The Toledo Area Associate Networking Group, which includes sisters and lay associates affiliated with several area religious communities, is participating in a day of service today at the Sylvania Franciscan campus. Members will be sewing “pillow case” dresses and drawstring shorts, based on the national program Little Dresses for Africa. They also will assemble hygiene care packages. Both will be distributed to missions around the world.

Donations of sewing supplies or travel-sized toiletry items, such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap or shampoo, will be accepted until 3 p.m. The campus is at 6832 Convent Blvd., Sylvania.

The Toledo Area Associate Networking Group includes sisters and male and female lay associates from the Sisters of St. Francis in Sylvania, Sisters of St. Francis in Tiffin, Ursuline Sisters of Toledo, Sisters of Mercy, and Sisters of Notre Dame.

Beer and Hymns

Maumee Valley Presbytery is sponsoring a “Beer and Hymns” sing-a-long at the Black Cloister Brewing Co. at 7 p.m. Sunday.

“Beer and Hymns” launched last fall under the Rev. Patrick Harley, then pastor of Ottawa Presbyterian Church in Putnam County. It invites participants to join in traditional hymns, which on Sunday will be led by musicians Mark Owen and Theo Stiegler. The Rev. Margaret Fox of First Presbyterian Church of Perrysburg is organizing the event.

“Beer and Hymns” is expected to last about an hour, and there is no cover charge to attend. Black Cloister Brewing Co. is at 619 Monroe St.

Minister installation

The First Unitarian Church of Toledo will formally install the Rev. T.K. Barger as its minister at 4 p.m. on Sunday. The Rev. Barger, a former Blade religion editor, has served as the church’s full-time minister since February. He was ordained there in 2013 and previously served as community minister.

The Rev. Jeffrey Gamblee, who is active in social justice at First Unitarian Universalist Church in Columbus, will preach at the installation service.

Clergy are invited to wear the garments of their tradition. A reception will follow.

Jewish film fest

The fifth annual Toledo Jewish Film Festival starts on Monday. Its six-movie lineup continues through July 10.

The first film, Remember, features Academy Award-winners Christopher Plummer and Martin Landau as Auschwitz survivors who embark on a cross-continental road trip to bring justice to the Nazi guard who destroyed their lives.

Later festival titles are: The Pickle Recipe, on June 5, a family comedy preceded by a pickle tasting and conversation with writer/producer Sheldon Cohn; The Midnight Orchestra on June 12; Indignation on June 19; and Hummus the Movie and The Last Blintz on July 10.

“Our objective is to share with you some excellent Jewish-themed films that are often featured in major cities but unfortunately are rarely shown in Toledo,” said Ralph and Ruth Delman, festival sponsors. “It is our pleasure to give back to the community that has given so much to us and to our family.”

Films are shown at 7 p.m. at the Franciscan Center of Lourdes University, 6832 Convent Blvd., Sylvania. Admission is $7 per film or $30 for the series. Tickets can be purchased at the door, by calling 419-724-0361 or emailing colette@jewishtoledo.org.

Deacons ordained

Bishop Daniel Thomas will celebrate a transitional diaconate ordination Mass at 11 a.m. today at Our Lady, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Cathedral. He will ordain Kyle T. Gase, Scott J. Perry and Andrew J. Wellmann to the Order of Deacon, a major step in their journey to becoming priests for the Diocese of Toledo.

The cathedral is at 2535 Collingwood Blvd. All are invited to attend.

Mr. Gase served his pastoral internship year at Most Blessed Sacrament Parish in Toledo, Mr. Perry at Christ the King Parish in Toledo and Mr. Wellmann at St. Peter Parish in Mansfield. Each attends Mount St. Mary’s Seminary of the West in Cincinnati.
