CRANBERRY, Pa. — Teen clothing retailer rue21 is closing about one-third of its U.S. stores — including three in the Toledo region — as it focuses on its online business.

The privately held firm is closing nearly 400 stores, although it gave no time frame. The firm, based in Cranberry, Pa., will be left with more than 700 stores in 48 states.

Rue21’s website said local stores closing are: in Spring Meadows Place at 1510 Spring Meadows Dr. in Holland; Shoppes on South Main at 1111 S. Main St., Bowling Green, and in Mall of Monroe at 2121 N. Monroe, Monroe. Stores in Franklin Park Mall, Liberty Square in Fremont, at 2360 Tiffin Ave. in Findlay, Northtowne Mall in Defiance, and Adrian Plaza will stay open.
