20 North Gallery showcases emerging artists

  • 20 North Gallery in downtown Toledo has organized an exhibition of three emerging artists in the Toledo area that work in oil, acrylic, and digital media.

    ARToledo 2018: Chrysalis features the work of Samantha Bell-Koch, Martha Evans, and Kerry Kirkpatrick. The show opens Friday with a free reception from 6 to 9 p.m.

    The competitive show was open to entrants whose work has never been featured in a commercial gallery space. The show was juried by Maralee Hope, who was an intern for 20 North Gallery in 2009, and is a presale shipping coordinator at Christie’s Auction House in New York City.

    Bell-Koch of Toledo is an acrylic painter who received her bachelor of arts degree from the University of Toledo in 2015. Evans of Swanton also has an art degree from UT and works in oils. Kirkpatrick of Toledo has a bachelor’s degree in digital art, and works with digital images and computer graphics.

    ■ The fourth installation of a mythical exhibition series has opened in the Dudley and Mary Marks Lea Gallery within the Virginia B. Gardner Fine Arts Pavilion at the University of Findlay.

    Enchanted Brush Exhibition: Maidens of Myth is a show organized by Daniel Chudzinski, curator at the Mazza Museum of International Art from Picture Books. Lea Gallery is attached to the museum, and is at 201 College St.

    The theme of Chudzinski’s fourth installment focuses on female characters from literature, including heroines, fairy godmothers, queens, and goddesses. The artwork featured in the show comes from artists across the country whose work has been featured by various nationally known organizations including Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Dungeons & Dragons, and Game of Thrones.

    The show includes a talk by artist Ed Binkley, an art professor at Madison College, Madison, Wis. He will speak at the museum at 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, and a tour of the exhibition by Chudzinski will follow at 6 p.m.

    The Lea Gallery is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays, and from 1 to 4 p.m. Sundays. All exhibitions are free.

    ■ The American Frame Showroom in Maumee is showing a national, traveling exhibition that celebrates the work of females in science and highlights the challenges and obstacles they face.

    The Bearded Lady Project is a documentary film and photographic project on display through Sept. 26.

    “The project documents the lives of women in the sciences and how gendered stereotypes about the field can be illuminated with some well-placed facial hair,” a news release from American Frame states.

    An opening reception will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, and additional events will be at 4:30 p.m. July 25 and 5:30 p.m. Aug. 16.

    ■ The Sights and Sounds Festival in Chelsea, Mich., will host its annual Chalk Art Contest from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., July 28.

    The competition includes 11 categories in which more than $1,300 in prizes will be awarded.

    Interested participants must register by Friday to be eligible for monetary prizes. A $25 registration fee includes a 5 foot-by-5-foot pavement space, a T-shirt, and a box of chalk. Spaces for children are free, but they must register for prizes.

    ■ Two local glass artists have some of their work shown in Momentum Gallery in Asheville, N.C.

    Reflections is open through Aug. 25 and features the work of artists Joanna Manousis and Alli Hoag, head of the glass program at Bowling Green State University.

    The glass art show is in conjunction with the Dale Chihuly exhibition at Biltmore Estate and focuses on the conception and construction of the estate during the Gilded Age during the late 19th Century.
