Toledo Museum of Art hosts mix of concerts this week

The Toledo Museum of Art rises to the front of the classics scene this weekend with slate full concert offerings and unique musical events.

The Ken Thomson Sextet, featuring Ken Thomson, composer, sax, and clarinet player from the Bang on a Can All Stars and the punk-jazz combo Gutbucket, performs at 8 p.m. Thursday in the GlasSalon; tickets $15 Museum members, $20 nonmembers.

Jazz Vocalist Sarah D’Angelo explores social justice in jazz with songs of revolution, peace, and harmony with a free concert as a part of It’s Friday! 6:30 p.m. Friday in the GlasSalon.

Finally, legendary ambient/avant garde composer Harold Budd presents an artist talk 6:30 p.m. Saturday followed by a rare public concert at 8 p.m. in the Peristyle. The performance will include a world premiere of a suite for keyboards and string ensemble, Petits Souffles; tickets are $15 for museum members and $35 nonmembers.

Budd will give an additional gallery talk at 3 p.m. Sunday in Gallery 1 discussing how the visual arts have been a constant source for his compositional inspiration.

■ The Owens Community College Concert Band presents its free fall concert of music from Star Wars, Chicago, Mamma Mia!, Star Trek, and The Glenn Miller Story. Veterans will be recognized and honored on this 100th anniversary of Armistice Day with patriotic music and readings. Euphonium player, sophomore Aaron Bremer will be the featured soloist. ■ The Toledo Piano Teachers Association presents a program “Teaching Outside the Box” given by Rebecca Harold at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Emmanuel Baptist Church, 4207 West Laskey Rd. The program is open to the public.

■ The University Musical Society presents the Jerusalem Quartet joined by legendary violinist Pinchas Zukerman and cellist Amanda Forsyth. On the program is Richard Strauss’ Sextet from Capriccio, op. 85, Schoenberg’s Verklärte Nacht, and Tchaikovsky’s Souvenir de Florence. ■ Deadline for applying for the 2018 Arts Commission of Greater Toledo Merit Awards is Oct. 22. The program recognizes outstanding local artists in the visual, performing, and literary arts with financial awards. ■ Singers are sought to participate in an All-Bach Festival to be held Feb. 17. The concert will feature two cantatas: BWV 1 Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern and BWV 125 Mit Fried und Freud ich fahr dahin. Cost to participate is $10 per singers with a max of $50 for any church or organization. Rehearsals include: sectionals at 7 p.m. Jan. 23 at St. Joseph Catholic Church Maumee and at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 6 at Collingwood Presbyterian Church.
