Street crews confronted by city's big 'hole-in-one.' City workers stare into what looks like a bottomless pit at West Bancroft Street and Detroit Avenue Wednesday June 27, 1979. During their efforts to repair the hole, caused by the collapse of an old sanitary sewer. As workers were attempting to clean up "the hole mess" Tuesday, another, slightly smaller crater was discovered. The hole has limited traffic on Brancroft to one lane each way at the busy intersection. Officials said repairs will probably take three to four weeks.

FARMS26

"My grandkids drink this water," Duane Stateler said regarding his personal concern about the water quality near and around the hog farming operation he runs with his son Anthony (not pictured) in McComb. Mr. Stateler is a fifth generation farmer who fertilizes his wheat, corn and soy beans with manure produced from his hog farming operations. To help combat pollution in Lake Erie he will voluntarily be installing field edge monitoring equipment later this summer to measure runoff from his land as a Demonstration Farm for the The Ohio Farm Bureau and the Natural Resources Conservation Service. Other farmers in the Northwest Ohio region are also trying different approaches to combat runoff from their fields, including experimenting with different cover crops and testing different fertilizer application methods for maximum efficiency. The wheat field pictured is next to Mr. Stateler's home and will be one of the fields under monitoring.
