VLT-halloween-1

There was a time when clowns were just plain cute, and bobbing for apples didn’t have to mean getting all wet. The time was Halloween, 1978. At left, Elise Franklin, 7, sinks her teeth into a crisp, tasty apple at the downtown Toledo-Lucas County Library where library staff member Jim Gasser helps. Eric Klute, 3, at right, beams an adorable grin beneath all of those freckles, and was probably rewarded with a lot of candy on his night of trick-or-treating. Toledo police reported few problems that night, other than the usual soaping of windows and smashing of pumpkins. Not one report of a creepy clown. Hope your Halloween evening goes just as smoothly.treats for their prowling Thursday night. At left, Elise Franklin, 7, sinks her teeth into a tasty apple at the downtown Toledo-Lucas County Public Library, where library staff member Jim Gasser helps Eric Klute, 3, right, show the grin that no doubt brought him lots of candy. Area youngsters must have been satisfied with their treats, for there were few pranks reported throughout the area, law enforcement officials said. Aside from the usual soaping of windows and smashing of pumpkins, they said there was little vandalism.
