VLT-plane-crash-1

Patrolman Thomas Van Camp eyes the wreckage at the scene on Sunday October 1, 1972 after a Curtiss C-46 Commando WWII surplus transport plane made an emergency landing in field of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Keil's farm at Reynolds Rd. and Hill Ave. Due to damage, legal entanglements, and simple confoundment, the plane would not be totally removed until November 1, 1974. Pilot and co-pilot, James Kuglar, 48, of Newark, Del. and Peter Hernandez, 23, of Miami were each uninjured. For a variety of reasons ranging from the damage to the plane, to the muddy field, to eventual legal entanglements, the plane was not totally removed from that field for more than two years. Plans to dismantle or repair the aircraft in order to remove it soon turned into legal hold-ups, including three federal lawsuits.
