The Toledo Area Humane Society will host a public discussion Saturday about how residents can help stop puppy mill cruelty in Ohio.

The event will be from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the 827 Illinois Ave. shelter in Maumee. The humane society and Stop Puppy Mills Ohio support a proposed ballot measure seeking a constitutional amendment to strengthen the state’s commercial breeding laws.

Ohio has hundreds of commercial breeding facilities, often called puppy mills, where dogs are repeatedly bred. Many spend their entire lives in small wire cages and are denied exercise, socialization, and basic veterinary care.

The ballot measure would ban wire flooring, prevent breeders from stacking cages on top of each other, require daily exercise, socialization, and more responsible breeding practices.
