An update on efforts to prevent escape of potentially dangerous waste from the Oregon landfill operated by Envirosafe Services of Ohio Inc. is the subject of a public information session and hearing Tuesday.

The event, which will include a discussion about future monitoring, begins at 6 p.m. inside Oregon City Council Chambers, 5330 Seaman Rd. Envirosafe’s landfill, the only of its kind in Ohio, is at 876 Otter Creek Rd., Oregon.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency is hosting the meeting to take comments about the company’s plan to modify its permit with improvements classified by regulators as corrective actions. The focus is on closed waste cells, where hazardous waste is buried.

Envirosafe’s proposal is to combine two groundwater monitoring requirements, including shallow and deep well monitoring. It maintains that will help it detect any possible releases to the bedrock aquifer early.

The proposed modifications can be viewed online, at the Oregon branch of the Toledo Lucas County Library, or at the Ohio EPA’s district office in Bowling Green. Written comments will be accepted by the state agency until Feb. 23.
