The eighth annual Barrio Latino Art Festival will deliver an array of colors to the streets of the South End neighborhood from 1 to 11 p.m. Aug. 10 at 1411 Broadway St. Nuestra Gente Community Projects took over organizing responsibilities for the festival several years ago, but added some new entertainment this year.
Here are a few things to know:
1. Founded in 2012, the Barrio Latino Art Festival is the first local celebration centered on the Latino arts and promoting the South End.
2. The mission for the Barrio Latino Art Festival is to support local artists, promote artistic expression, and bring visitors and neighbors together to share in the spirit of the arts. Linda Parra, the event’s organizer, says you will not want to miss the “Danza Guadalupana,” the traditional Mexican-Indian dance honoring Our Lady of Guadalupe. Performers in colorful attire dance to the beat of drums and sleigh bells.
3. The one-day event features music, dancing, food, artwork for sale and on display by local artists, mural painting, a kids’ area, and an annual artist recognition award. The festival is introducing a parade featuring a mariachi band, low riders and little girls twirling batons.
