The University of Toledo has received a $1 million gift to research pancreatic cancer.

Toledo businessman Hal Fetterman and his wife, Susan, pledged the donation to honor Mr. Fetterman’s sister and three friends who lost their lives to pancreatic cancer.

It is the fourth-leading cause of cancer death in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The Fetterman’s donation will cover the cost of a clinical drug trial at the University of Toledo Medical Center, the former Medical College of Ohio Hospital, and support a competition among researchers. It also will be used to recruit a pre-eminent researcher to the UT College of Medicine and Life Sciences.
