TPS posts show students mimicking wounds during active shooter drill

Toledo Early College held an active shooter drill Tuesday and then posted to the school’s Facebook page scores of pictures that some people found disturbing.

The photos feature students with red marks on their clothes and bodies resembling blood stains from gunshot wounds. In some cases boys and girls appear lying lifelessly on the floor or across a desk, and in other cases they pose for the camera holding up ‘peace’ signs.  Some students are shown smiling while others appear to imitate loss of consciousness or worse.

Several people posted disapproving comments on the school’s Facebook page Tuesday night.

“I find this post very disturbing,” wrote Nancy Ham in a post.

This is not a drill

Wrote Betsy Gehring: “Every adult involved in the decision... that occurred leading up to this nonsense should be fired. Seriously. What in the hell were you all thinking!?”

“This post cannot be real. Active shooter drills are now fodder for FB posts???...,” Laura Dierks said in part in her comment.

Patty Mazur, spokesman for Toledo Public Schools, confirmed there was a safety drill Tuesday at Toledo Early College. She said it was held “in conjunction with” the University of Toledo, Toledo police, and the Toledo Fire And Rescue Department.

The spokesman initially said she was not aware of the Facebook post when reached by The Blade late Tuesday night.

Ms. Mazur later said district officials are having the posts removed from Facebook.

“We take the safety and security of our students and staff very seriously...” she said. “We apologize if anyone found the post inappropriate.”
