Off-duty officer pulls man from burning vehicle

A Delta man was pulled from his burning vehicle by an off-duty police officer after it struck a pole early Thursday on westbound I-475, according to the Sylvania Township Fire Department’s Facebook page. 

Jason A. Risner, 39, was traveling westbound on I-475 near the Holland-Sylvania overpass at about 12:20 a.m. Thursday when his vehicle went off the right side of the road and struck a pole, according to the Ohio Highway Patrol.

His vehicle caught fire, troopers said. 

According to a Sylvania Township Fire Department’s Facebook post, an off-duty officer pulled Mr. Risner from the burning vehicle. The officer’s name and department was not provided in the police report and it could not be immediately provided by other agencies. 

Sylvania Township EMS took Mr. Risner to ProMedica Flower Hospital for injuries that were not life-threatening, troopers said. 

Mr. Risner was issued a citation for operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. 

Police cleared the scene just before 2 a.m., according to the police report.
