Ramadan Begins

Ramadan begins this week. Muslims mark the holy month with prayer and daylong fasting, a practice that comprises one of the Five Pillars of Islam. Fasting is intended to bring a practitioner closer to God.

Ramadan concludes in Eid al-Fitr, a three-day celebration that this year falls in mid-June. Eid al-Fitr in past years has drawn thousands of area Muslims to the SeaGate Convention Centre in joint prayer and celebration.

Charity pig roast

Zion Lutheran Church in Ottawa Lake, Mich., hosts a pig roast on May 19. Proceeds will benefit a church-sponsored food pantry, which serves more than 40 area families, as well as a first-time faith-based children’s summer camp at the church.

Christ Camp “is our first step in offering the community children more fun-filled options when school concludes in a few weeks,” Pastor Terry Rebert said in a statement. Dr. Murray Howe, son of “Mr. Hockey” Gordie Howe and author of a book on the lessons he learned from his father, is set to be involved at the camp.

The pig roast is scheduled for 4 to 6:30 p.m. at the church, 8307 Memorial Hwy., Ottawa Lake, Mich. A suggested donation is $12. For more information, go to zionlutheranottawalakemi.com.

Central City Ministry of Toledo

Central City Ministry of Toledo hosts its 27th annual Urban All-American Celebration on May 22. Tickets are available by contacting 419-214-4906 or mkravetsky@ccmtschool.org.

CCMT is comprised of the two Catholic schools that serve the central city neighborhood, Queen of Apostles and Rosary Cathedral. Its Urban All-American Celebration is a fund-raiser that recognizes standout students, alumni and others who have contributed to the school ministry.

Awards include the Rev. Bernard J. Boff Service Award, which recognizes those who have made outstanding contributions in the promotion and enhancement of Catholic education in the central city schools. It is being awarded this year to the Christ Child Society, which maintains the library and provides tutoring services to the children at Rosary Cathedral Catholic School.

Achievement Awards recognize exemplary alumni of CCMT schools; this year’s recipients are Lee Huss, chief operating officer of the Overhead Door Company of Toledo, and Stacy Miller, a physical education teacher for CCMT. Osvaldo Ramirez, of St. John's Jesuit High School, Guadalupe Zarate, of Notre Dame Academy, and Ryan and Raymond Sanders, of Central Catholic High School, will also be recognized as recent alumni.

The event is at the Renaissance Hotel Downtown Toledo. A social hour with cash bar and appetizers will begin at 6 p.m.; dinner and a program follow at 7 p.m. Tickets are $100, $50 of which is tax deductible.
