To the editor: Michigan football trips overseas are a luxury
5/7/2018I rarely read the sports section of The Blade, but I recently followed the stories regarding the Paris trip taken by the University of Michigan’s football team and staff. I’m sure that the international travel the team has done the past two years is a wonderful bonding experience, as the coach noted, and it may even be a recruiting tool.
What I take issue with is that the author of the articles, Kyle Rowland, mentioned in every article I read that the players can’t participate in study abroad programs due to their schedules during the academic year, and that “most students don’t take advantage of” such programs either. But most students are not receiving full scholarships, as some student-athletes do.
While a semester abroad would not increase a student’s tuition, there would obviously be other costs incurred. Unlike the student-athletes, most other students do not have wealthy donors funding their travel abroad for themselves and family members.

GOP shows its true colors
Speaker Paul Ryan fired the House chaplain for ... being too Christian. The Blade’s May 2 editorial on the matter, “A chaplain got the boot,” concluded with the sentence: “So it goes in Washington.”
No, it doesn’t. This action is on the Republicans. Any effort to create a false equivalency on this issue would be nonsense. And that holds for most things in Washington. When Republicans find themselves in a pickle, they point fingers all around except at themselves.
