REYNOLDSBURG, Ohio — Central Catholic’s girls tennis team advanced to the final of the Ohio Tennis Coaches Association Division II tournament Sunday, but fell 3-0 to Shaker Heights Hathaway Brown to finish in second place.
It is the first time the Irish played in the state final. To get there, Central Catholic had to beat Dayton Oakwood 3-1.
Ava McQuillin registered a 6-4, 6-1 win at first singles, while Ellie Hire earned a 6-0, 6-0 win at the third spot. The first doubles team of Rachel Gorman and Bella Spinazze registered a 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 victory to clinch the berth in the final match. Molly Hunter and Molly Mattimoe fell 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2 doubles for the only loss. Maverick Delp’s match at third singles wasn’t finished.
In Division I, Perrysburg placed third by beating Lewis Center Olentangy Orange 3-2.
Emma Carter earned a 6-3, 7-6 victory at first singles, Sydney Onest took a 7-5, 6-4 decision at the No. 2 spot, while the top doubles team of Gemma Smith and Kyleigh Henthorn earned a 6-3, 4-6, 6-0 win to clinch the placing for the Yellow Jackets. Caitlyn Schankula fell 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3 singles, and the second doubles team fell 6-0, 6-2.
The Yellow Jackets lost 3-0 to Mason in a semifinal match. The Comets beat Rocky River Magnificat to win the title for the second consecutive season.
