Michigan Gov. Whitmer calls on MHSAA to consider moving fall sports

LANSING — Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on Tuesday discussed the prospects of fall sports beginning under the Michigan Safe Start Plan, and one idea that floated around was some fall sports moving to the spring.

Fall sports involving contact and very little social distancing, including football, are among those that Whitmer believes should be considered for postponement. She said the Michigan High School Athletic Association and the National Federal of State High School Associations are still settling on safe guidelines for play.

“I’m also calling on the Michigan High School Athletic Association to consider postponing fall sports that have the impossibility of social distancing that’s a part of them — consider moving those to the spring and running some of the more individualized sports like track and field or tennis or golf to the fall,” she said. “I anticipate a decision coming from them somewhere around July 20 to 25. That’s what they’ve indicated.”

The start of the fall sports practice schedule is Aug. 10 for football and Aug. 12 for everything else.
